Crooked Spring Road is a short street in North Billerica in the Oakvale subdivision, joining the far ends of Michael Road and Theresa Avenue. Until about 1991 it was Karen Street. It was laid out as "Karen St.," 50 feet wide, on the "'Oakvale' Subdivision Plan of Land in Billerica, Mass.," dated December 30, 1964, owned by Quality Homes, Inc., of Main Street, Tewksbury, and drawn by Dana F. Perkins & Sons, Inc., civil engineers and surveyors, of Lowell. The plan was recorded in September 1965 (Plan Book 102, Plan 95). It shows Karen Street running between Michael Road and Theresa Avenue, with lots 9 to 16 on its eastern side. The houses on the street date from about 1968 to 1970. Like Michael and Theresa, Karen is a given name; the reason for the choice was not found.
The town accepted Karen Street as a public way, together with Theresa Avenue and Michael Road, under Article 40 of the annual town meeting of 1972, which opened on March 11, 1972. The name was changed in about 1991, in the years 1988 to 1991 when the town renamed streets to remove duplicate names; Billerica also had a Karen Circle. High school yearbooks give addresses on Karen Street through 1990 and on Crooked Spring Road, with the same house numbers, from 1992. The origin of the name Crooked Spring was not found. Residents petitioned the special town meeting of June 6, 2002 to fix the drainage and repave Theresa Avenue, "Crooked Springs Road" and Michael Road, but the article was dismissed. The street was repaved in fiscal 2008 and crack sealed in 2019.
